“One of the few effective keys to the design problem is the ability of the designer to recognize as many of the constraints as possible, and the willingness and enthusiasm to work within these constraints.”
-Charles Eames
All designers have a love/hate relationship with constraints, ourselves included!
After years of being Managing Members for JOIN, organizing countless pop-up shops and group tradeshow booths, we wanted to return to our collective roots with a curated group show. We joined forces with Melanie Abrantes to conceive, design, curate and execute a group show focusing on working within a given set of constraints. This gave participating designers a chance to experiment, take a break from their daily design practices, and flex their design muscles. Selected submissions had to be a new design that was under 8”x8”, made out of a single material, and fit within the theme of REFLECT.
Ranging from spiritual and meditative to visually expressive, this collection of 15 one-of-a-kind objects debuted at Sight Unseen OFFSITE in May 2016 during NYCxDESIGN.
Our submission—a Sundial, is a simple geometric timepiece. Designed to track the movement of the sun and utilize shadows to denote time. Marking the passing of hours, and reflecting upon our timeless connection between sunrise and sunset.
